KHYAL

Editor-in-Chief

kHyal writes professionally for startups, non-profits, small businesses, and global public tech companies (Akamai, Palo Alto Networks, Datto, Bitdefender, Okta), along with various media outlets. She was on Seth Godin’s global Carbon Almanac Network team and spearheaded the Fashion Sustainability Resource Guide that was later featured in Yale Climate Connections. She is a former tech founder and was a frequent guest and sometimes host on Jason CalcanisSilicon Alley Reporter live-streaming show in the 90s.

kHyal began her professional art career in Los Angeles. She first worked for Richard Tobey in the art restoration and period framing trade on projects for The Getty, LACMA, and private collectors, including Mrs. Bob Hope and Steve Martin. She was later recruited by Joan Wheeler Ankrum of Ankrum Gallery. A gallery of considerable note, Ankrum’s initial funding came from Joseph Hirshhorn, who became a loyal patron. The Smithsonian Archives of American Art, which now holds the gallery’s archives, documented that Ankrum Gallery “was among the earliest to exhibit the work of black artists.” A 1971 New York Times article about women gallery owners in Los Angeles cited that Ankrum Gallery was “the largest in sales and size in La Cienega Boulevard.” Ankrum was a co-founder of the Art Dealers Association of America and an active member of the Black Arts Council. She also helped organize the Monday Night Art Walk program on La Cienega Boulevard.

kHyal learned the ropes of the art world from Joan, and what started as a relationship through employment grew into a deep and lasting friendship. Ankrum Gallery also went on to represent kHyal as an artist, which led to her first commissions from private collectors.

In recent years, kHyal has worked with museums and cultural institutions as a creative lead on experiential design projects. As Chief Creative Officer of architectural technology and experiential design firm Metinteractive, she contributed to significant initiatives for the Whitney Museum of American Art, Lincoln Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, BRIC Arts Media, and NYPL’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.
